Mexico is a dream destination for weddings, offering beautiful beaches, colorful towns, and incredible venues perfect for a celebration away from home
If what you’ve envisioned for your wedding includes bright turquoise waters and palm trees as your backdrop, Mexico is the perfect destination. With white sandy beaches and so many stunning all-inclusive resorts, it’s an ideal choice for a wedding that can feel both laid-back, but also incredibly elegant. You can opt for a casual ceremony on the beach with an intimate group, or choose from one of the many beautiful resorts for an elevated vibe.
In this Mexico wedding guide, we will cover everything you need to know about planning a wedding here, from choosing a time of year to deciding on a location. No matter what, a wedding here is sure to be the most incredible adventure!

One of the biggest reasons to choose a destination wedding is the effortless backdrop. Instead of spending a majority of your budget decorating a venue space, you get stunning scenery, whether it’s a beach like Mexico, or beautiful mountain views. The natural beauty of your location does most of the work for you, so you’re able to keep the decor simple and still have stunning photos. This makes it a plus for both your budget and the stress that can come with wedding planning.
Another huge benefit is how a destination wedding feels more like an experience than just a single day. You’re not just inviting guests to your wedding, you’re actually inviting them on a vacation with you! From group dinners to exploring the area together, it becomes a few days of celebrating with your favorite people instead of just a quick ceremony and reception. It’s the perfect way to soak in extra time with family and friends while making memories in a new place.
Destination weddings really can be easier to plan than you think. Most resorts and venues that specialize in weddings have dedicated coordinators, packages, and preferred vendors already lined up. That means less stress on your end, as well as freeing up a lot of your time! With the details taken care of, you can actually enjoy the planning process, and the wedding day itself, without feeling overwhelmed.

There are so many beautiful spots around Mexico that would be ideal for a destination wedding, but here are a few favorites!
Cancun is one of the most well-known destinations for weddings in Mexico, and it’s easy to see why. With bright turquoise water, long stretches of white sand beaches, and a wide range of luxury resorts, it’s a place where planning can feel surprisingly simple. Many resorts offer full wedding packages, making it easy for couples to host their ceremony and celebration all in one place while their guests enjoy a relaxing vacation. This destination wedding was at Secrets Playa Mujeres, and it was absolutely incredible!
Tulum has become a favorite for couples who want a destination wedding that feels a little more relaxed and design-forward. Known for its beautiful beaches, boutique hotels, and laid-back atmosphere, weddings here often have a natural, coastal feel with gorgeous details. It’s a great option if you love the idea of a beachfront celebration that feels intimate and more chic.
Cabo San Lucas has the dramatic scenery and beautiful weather on top of that. Located at the tip of the Baja Peninsula, Cabo is known for its desert landscapes meeting the ocean, incredible sunsets, and luxury resorts overlooking the water. Weddings here often feel both elevated and relaxed, with amazing views and plenty for guests to enjoy during their stay.
Puerto Vallarta combines beautiful beaches with a charming historic town. Colorful buildings, cobblestone streets, and oceanfront views make it feel both romantic and full of character. Weddings here can range from luxury resort celebrations to smaller events in boutique hotels overlooking the Pacific.

When it comes to picking the best time to get married in Mexico, each season has its own vibe, so it really depends on what you’re looking for.
If you don’t mind the heat and a little extra humidity, summer weddings can be a fun choice. Resorts often have better deals during this time, but you’ll want to prepare for afternoon showers. You can still luck out with some pretty beautiful days!
This is the quietest (and often cheapest) time for a Mexico wedding, but it’s also hurricane season. This means it’s good to have a solid backup plan, like a resort that has indoor spaces in case of rain! The upside is you’ll find fewer crowds, lush scenery from the rain, and some great off-season pricing.
This is peak season in Cancun, and for good reason because the weather is beautiful. There’s a lot less rain, warm sunshine and cooler evenings. The beaches are at their best, and your guests will love escaping the winter back home. Just keep in mind, prices are higher and resorts book up fast.
Spring is another sweet spot. The weather is still warm and sunny, but it’s usually less crowded than the holiday rush. You’ll have dreamy beach days without as many tourists, and it’s still early enough in the year to avoid the start of hurricane season.

One of the most important steps in the planning process is to have all of the proper paperwork and nail down the marriage requirements.
Here are Mexico’s marriage requirements:
But you have another option as well! If you want to avoid a lot of the hassle of an offical marriage in Mexico, you can instead make everything official back home and just celebrate here in Mexico with your people!

One of the things that makes a destination wedding so special is that the celebration often lasts longer than just one day. Since many of your guests are traveling to be there, couples often plan a few additional gatherings throughout the weekend so everyone has time to relax, connect, and enjoy the destination together. These events don’t have to be elaborate; they’re simply a way to spend more time with the people who made the trip to celebrate with you.
A welcome party is a great way to kick off the wedding weekend. This usually takes place the evening guests arrive and gives everyone a chance to settle in, grab a drink, and start meeting each other before the big day. For destination weddings in Mexico, couples often host casual beach gatherings, cocktail parties at their resort, or relaxed dinners at a local restaurant. It helps set the tone for the weekend and makes guests feel immediately included.
The rehearsal dinner is typically a more intimate event for close family and the wedding party the night before the ceremony. It’s a chance to walk through the ceremony details and then enjoy a relaxed meal together. Usually with a destination wedding at a resort, this dinner is hosted right on the property which makes it convenient for your guests!
The wedding day itself is the main celebration, and destination weddings often have a slightly more relaxed flow compared to traditional hometown weddings. Ceremonies might take place on the beach, overlooking the ocean, or in a beautiful garden setting, followed by cocktail hour and a reception where everyone can celebrate together. Because guests have traveled for the occasion, the energy tends to feel especially meaningful.
Many couples also plan optional group activities for guests during the weekend. This could be something like a boat day, snorkeling excursion, tequila tasting, or exploring a nearby town. These outings give guests a chance to experience the destination together and create even more shared memories outside of the wedding itself.
A farewell brunch is a fun way to wrap up the wedding weekend before everyone heads home. Couples often host a casual breakfast or brunch the morning after the wedding where guests can gather one last time, share stories from the night before, and say their goodbyes. It’s a simple but thoughtful way to end the celebration on a warm note.
Together, these events turn a destination wedding into more than just a single day. They create an entire weekend where your friends and family can slow down, spend time together, and truly enjoy the experience of celebrating in such a beautiful place.

When you’re planning a destination wedding, it’s super tempting to just go with the photographer included in your resort’s package, but hiring your own destination wedding photographer can make a world of difference. Resort photographers often work on a tight schedule, shooting multiple weddings a week, and their style can feel more generic or cookie-cutter.
If you want photos that actually capture your personalities, your love story, and all the little in-between moments, bringing in your own photographer is the way to go. They’ll usually arrive a day or two early, scout the best spots for photos, and stick around to capture more than just the ceremony; they’ll document the welcome party, the beach hangouts, the late-night dancing, and everything in between. Basically, you’re hiring someone who’s focused solely on telling your story, not just checking boxes for the resort.
